Biography

Ian Bates is Professor of Pharmacy Education at the School of Pharmacy, University of London.  As Head of Educational Development for the University, he has the job of progressing the organisational and policy development of pharmacy education at national and international levels and promoting informed debate, research and scholarly activity relating to higher education.

Ian's research interests include education (undergraduate and postgraduate), from both behavioural and organisational perspectives, to more mainstream pharmaceutical service themes, such as evidence based pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy and therapeutics.  He is Director of the Global Education Taskforce, a team jointly sponsored by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), WHO and UNESCO.  The Taskforce is actively tackling workforce capacity, development and education within the profession globally, with an immediate focus on sub-Saharan Africa.  The Taskforce works out from the FIP Collaborating Centre in London, jointly headed by Professor Bates.  The Taskforce has recently negotiated the development of a UNESCO backed UNITWIN network, a global first for pharmacy and health care professions.

He is Editor-in-Chief of Pharmacy Education, an international journal for pharmaceutical education, which publishes peer reviewed research and development in both undergraduate and postgraduate fields.  He is supported by an editorial board comprising of pharmaceutical scientists and academic educationalists drawn from 13 different countries.  The Journal is published with support from the World Health Organisation.

Membership Of Professional Bodies

Professor Bates is Vice President of the European Association of Faculties of Pharmacy (EAFP), a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, Director of the Global Education Taskforce (FIP-WHO-UNESCO), and a Trustee for the European Pharmaceutical Students’ Association. Professor Bates is also a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and UKCPA.
