The Advanced Pharmacy Practice Programme

The safe and effective use of medicines within both primary and secondary care is paramount for effective acute and chronic disease management. Pharmacists have a clear role to play in medicines management and the prescribing agenda, which necessarily means a modern and effective post-registration training programme.

What is the Advanced Pharmacy Practice (APP) Programme?

The APP Programme is a practitioner-led, performance-based programme which has been devised to support practitioner development in higher level practice.

APP Programme Progress document (Aug 09)

The Principles of the APP Programme are:

  • To support the development of advanced practice underpinned by existing professional development frameworks (specifically, the Advanced to Consultant Level Framework-ACLF).
  • To develop, validate and provide structured yet flexible learning alongside transferable training- (led by specialist groups).
  • To develop, validate and provide support for core learning around leadership, management, research and education as well as curricula in clinical, technical & MI knowledge and experience (led by the specialist groups).
  • To develop, validate and provide support that can be accessed alone, for CPD as well as for specific training needs, with flexibility to build learning towards a Masters in Advanced practice- based on practitioner demand.
  • To provide robust QA of assessments of the different levels of advanced practice (Foundation, Excellence and Mastery) and experience for practitioners practising at advanced levels.
  • To provide standard organisation and shared working practices across the geography.
  • To ensure the programme is practitioner led, NHS owned and performance based.

Who is the APP Programme for?

Band 8 pharmacists have the opportunity to undertake the APP (fast-track) Programme leading to an MSc in Advanced Practice from September 2009. Pharmacists currently in Band 8 posts can now apply for the APP (fast-track) Programme. For the fast track MSCc, having a Diploma is a requirement, otherwise APL (accreditation of prior learning) will be necessary.

Band 7 pharmacists are expected to be recruited onto the full APP Programme from October 2009. It is expected that these pharmacists will have completed the Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice.

What is the aim of the APP (fast-track) Programme?

To support practitioners to attain Excellence in all areas of practice (underpinned by the 6 ACLF clusters: Expert Practice; Building Working Relationships; Education, Training & Development;  Research & Evaluation; Management; and Leadership).
